“As my employer kept shortening
the amount of time I could spend with patients… I knew that I had to find another, better way.”

Dr. Lee’s Story
I was initially attracted to rheumatology because of the breadth of conditions that are treated by rheumatologists and because making a diagnosis requires thoroughly understanding the patient’s story, which is often very complex. I love puzzles, and diagnosing rheumatic disease was very much like puzzle solving.
I also felt like it was my calling to care for people who felt unseen and unheard or who felt frustrated and dismissed because their story didn’t seem to follow the textbook.
The advent of biological medications was life-changing for many patients. It was incredible seeing how these medications could not just treat but reverse many of the symptoms of rheumatic diseases. Over time though, there were many patients for whom the medications didn’t work or didn’t do enough, patients who wondered if there were alternatives to medication – especially given the costs and side effects of these medications, and patients who wanted to know if there were other things they could be doing to optimize their health.

This is what prompted me to return to school by enrolling in the integrative medicine fellowship at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine.
The experience was transformative, and I hoped to use what I learned in my rheumatology practice but found myself stymied by the constraints of corporate medicine.
As my employer kept shortening the amount of time I could spend with patients and adding administrative and other responsibilities that took away from my ability to care for patients, I knew that I had to find another, better way.
